Island Peak, also known as Imja Tse, is one of the most popular climbing peaks in the Everest region of Nepal. Renowned for its challenging yet accessible climb, it offers stunning scenery and passes through traditional Sherpa villages that leave trekkers with unforgettable experiences. Standing at 6,189m (20,306ft), the climb can be achieved in a single day, sparing adventurers from camping on the cold slopes. The views from the summit are breathtaking, offering close-up vistas of Everest and Lhotse.
This peak is ideal for beginners who have never climbed before, and the itinerary is carefully designed to allow ample time for acclimatization. The route includes a week of trekking along the famous ‘Everest Trail,’ passing through Namche Bazaar, Thyangboche, and Lobuche beside the Khumbu Glacier. Along the way, trekkers cross high passes like Cho La (5,367m) and Kongma La Pass (5,535m), helping prepare for the ascent of Island Peak.
Before the climb, the trek takes you through the Dudh Kosi Valley after an exciting flight to Lukla, passing friendly villages en route to Kalapathar and Everest Base Camp. After proper acclimatization, you’ll head up the Imja Khola Valley toward Island Peak. The standard climbing route follows the South East flank and South-West Ridge, with the base camp located at Pareshaya Gyab (5,087m) between Imja Tse and the side rocks of the Imja Glacier.
